Valentines Mansion, regarded as one of Redbridge’s ‘hidden treasures’, opened its doors to the public for the first time in 400-year history. After standing empty for 15 years, Valentines Mansion entered a new chapter in its distinguished history last weekend - ‘Valentines’ weekend - attracting over 5,000 visitors to a special, ‘sneak preview’ of the grade II*-listed 16th century country house and gardens.
Mayor’s prize draw raises £3,800
Prestigious venue also provided the setting for the announcement of a special prize draw that raised over £3,800 for Cllr Mrs Loraine Sladden, Mayor of Redbridge’s chosen charities - Haven House Childrens Hospice and the Dream Factory.
Proving a resounding success with families, casual visitors, art lovers and local historians alike, two books were filled with positive feedback and some lines of goods in the Valentines store were sold out within hours. It would seem that this newly-restored local treasure is set for an equally long - and bright - future.
Fun Day for families
Exploring the mansion’s children’s area with her two young toddlers and their grandparents in tow, local resident Michelle Wells said, “Valentines is absolutely gorgeous to look at and offers something for everyone. It’s as good as anything you’ll find at Hampton Court - and it’s right on our doorstep”.
Downstairs in the authentic replica kitchen, Rebecca Rigden-Green watched on as her 3-year old son, Noah, armed with icing bag, put the finishing touches to a traditional Victorian biscuit. She said, “I’m very impressed. Valentines offers an incredibly interactive experience for all ages, and it’s definitely worth a second visit”.
Vicky de Wit, Redbridge Council’s Head of Cultural Services said, “We have been pleasantly overwhelmed by the interest people have shown in Valentines Mansion this weekend, and proves that the time, hard work and sheer commitment of all those responsible for its restoration was worthwhile”.
Councillor Linda Huggett, Deputy Leader of Redbridge Council and Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and the Olympics, said “Valentines Mansion offers an important and intriguing insight into the heritage of Redbridge. “This has been an extremely successful weekend on many levels. I’d like to extend my congratulations to everyone who has contributed to bringing this magnificent local treasure to life”.
