Julian Walker’s project as first artist-in-residence at Valentines Mansion will look at the story of the Belgian refugees who lived there during the First World War. Up to 57 people who escaped from the advancing armies lived in the Mansion, many of them postal workers, supported by Ilford postal workers; in 1918 the last of them were moved out to make way for convalescing wounded soldiers.
Walker’s grandfather performed locally in a fundraising concert for refugees in 1914, before joining up and being wounded on the Belgian border in 1918, and Walker will be making a video performance on that site of the songs his grandfather sang.
The artist will also be working with refugees living in Redbridge to research what happened to the Belgian refugees during their time at the Mansion and afterwards. Together they will use this material, drawings, found objects from Belgium and scraps salvaged from the refurbishment of the Mansion, to make a set of artworks looking at the links and the differences between then and now.
Gone Away is an Arts Council funded visual arts projected delivered by the borough's Arts & Events and Valentines Mansion teams.
